My IG Reel That Went VIRAL
After a trying year of pandemic world, my little family and I had decided to book a family vacation to a far of destination.
We needed the release, the de-stress, the adventure, the change of scenery.
What I didn’t expect, was to be walking down the beach with my family, enjoying the sunshine and freedom, and get a barrage of notifications from my Instagram.
I know what you’re thinking… oh so I have to go to Hawaii and get some incredible iconic footage of me in a bikini with white sand to go viral.
But I promise you, that’s not where we are headed.
I had no crazy photoshoots planned for our Hawaii time. If anything, I wanted to be off of my phone and away from social media instead of on it. I wanted to be connecting with nature, breathing slowly, and enjoying a place I had never been before.
But alas, this was the perfect time IG would decide for a reel I made more than TWO WEEKS earlier to go viral.
And it wasn’t a video of me in a sexy bikini, nor was it one of my clever time-lapses redecorating my living room.
NOPE. It was me looking a hot mess posting about an annoying toy my MIL got us for Christmas.
Sure I thought it was funny for some folks, but viral funny? I guess so!
My phone buzzed incessantly for about 2.5 days.
200k+ views and around 300 comments later, it finally subsided.
I cursed myself - why hadn’t I set up a damn affiliate link for that dumb toy!
Missed opportunity.
With all those 200k+ views, how many followers do you think I gained?
Was I an influencer over night!?
NOPE. Wrong again.
I gained about 50 followers from all that viewership.
I tell you all of this because it was an INCREDIBLE learning experience for me.
1) Just because you have a viral video does not mean you will get rich or become an influencer. Stop wishing and praying for it. Stop thinking it will change everything.
2) If your bio isn’t optimized and your feed not consistently showing someone value… NOONE is going to click follow. At the time of going viral, I don’t even think I had a bio! hah! I only got the 50 followers after I quickly realized what was happening and put some “Mom Life IDK” in my bio to try and convert those eyeballs.
3) You can post whenever you want, you can post whatever you want, JUST MAKE IT AUTHENTIC. There was NO trending audio on my viral reel. There was NO prep work to make it happen. Rip the bandaid off and post more frequent, less polished, and more FUN.
I followed up that viral reel with a video of the very nice bathroom at my airBNB in Hawaii, I thought for sure that would keep the views rolling in… but that one to this day has about 2k views.
It’s a hustle people, so stay consistent, and if you can’t get to a place where you’re doing it consistently on your own, just hire us to do it for you and get back to enjoying nature.
